Cool Down with Passion fruit and Açai

How delicious this drink looks? And yes, it’s a recipe with frozen fruits, which generally is not recommended in Ayurveda.

Both açai and passion fruit are sour by taste. According to Ayurveda, there are six tastes in the foods we eat. Sour taste has a warming effect and it benefits Vata. Pitta and Kapha can consume it in small quantities and low frequency.

Sour foods stimulate digestion, promote the elimination of waste from the body and stimulates appetite. Take our quiz here, if you want to know your dosha.

According to Ayurveda, cold drinks slow the metabolism while hot or warm beverages stimulate it and help digestion.

So why am I sharing this recipe? On very hot days and if your digestion has no symptoms such as bloating, constipation, or heaviness, you can enjoy this delicious drink. Cold drinks can help you cool down not just your body but also your mind.

Now to the ingredients

Açai
In this part of the world, these berries are hard to find; we rely on powdered or Frozen açai that you can find at most supermarkets.

Açai is rich in antioxidants; it has 3 times the amount found in blueberries. It is also rich in vitamins A, C and E. They’re high in fat — omega-3s, 6s, and 9s. Açai is relatively low in sugar.

Açai’s vitamin C content also contributes to the natural collagen production.

The most popular way to eat açai is in açai bowls; these bowls are packed with all kinds of fruits and even granola, making them high in sugars.

Passion fruit
Passion fruit grows in warm climates, including South America, where açai is from.

This fruit has a soft pulp and lots of seeds inside; you can eat the seeds and pulp. The passion fruit we find in the US supermarkets is two times smaller than those we see in South Americo.

Passion fruit is a good source of vitamin C, A and fiber.
One purple passion fruit contains:
Calories: 17
Fiber: 2 grams
Vitamin C: 9% of the Daily Value (DV)
Vitamin A: 8% of the DV
Iron: 2% of the DV
Potassium: 2% of the DV

The vitamin C in passion fruit helps protect the body from damage caused by free radicals. It helps the body absorb more iron from vegetables and fruits and may improve the body’s ability to fight off infections.

I always find the frozen passion fruit pulp at Mexican supermarkets in the frozen section.

Fresh purple passion fruit, believe or not, I can find it from time to time at Safeway and sometimes at a natural grocery store, here I find it organic.

Edible flowers are easy to find at local grocery stores or buy directly from here; this is a fresh as it gets as Joanna picks them the morning you will get them up.
